Nearly two decades after first appearing on the Atari 2600, Frogger is back in a new 3-D world. In this sequel, Frogger must rescue 175 baby frogs from Swampy the Crocodile, with 35 levels split between 10 worlds. Frogger's arsenal includes the power croak, super hop, and heat-seeking tongue, and specially designed multiplayer levels for up to four players on a split screen are available, as well as the ability to play over the internet and LAN.
Frogger 2 is the sequel to Hasbro's 1998 3D remake of the classic Atari arcade game. The graphics, gameplay, and level design have all been improved, resulting in an engaging arcade-style action game with simple controls and mechanics that should appeal to players seeking a traditional platform action game.
The game consists of more than 30 3D levels filled with enemies, obstacles, traps, and puzzles. In each level, five frog babies await rescue, and players must collect extra lives, power-ups, and gold coins while navigating the various hazards. Additionally, there are bonus retro levels that can be unlocked by collecting every gold coin in a particular level.
The graphics are colorful and highly detailed, with smooth animation even when numerous obstacles and enemies are on-screen. The camera transitions seamlessly between third-person and top-down views, providing a good perspective for the gameplay. The sound, while not particularly noteworthy, includes an upbeat, arcade-like musical score.
There are three difficulty settings: normal, which provides a set number of lives and unlimited time; easy, which offers more starting lives and bonus lives; and hard, which sets a time limit on each level. The levels themselves are well-designed and varied, featuring classic two-dimensional arcade-style challenges cleverly incorporated into a three-dimensional world.
The simple tile-based movement controls, which allow players to move one space forward, backward, and to either side, as well as jump up and forward, enable them to focus on the occasionally frustrating traps and puzzles. The game's save system helps alleviate some of this frustration, as progress is automatically saved after completing each level.
Frogger 2's 30 unique and detailed levels, along with the additional bonus levels, characters, and features, should provide many hours of entertainment for players seeking traditional arcade action. The game offers multiple modes, including a story mode that allows players to progress through the levels sequentially and an arcade mode that lets them jump to any completed level.
While Frogger 2's basic premise limits it to a few basic controls and tile-based movement, the game's new twists on old puzzles and its fast, simple arcade action will appeal to fans of the original game and players looking for a classic-style platformer. Overall, Frogger 2 successfully builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, delivering an updated and enjoyable take on the classic arcade game.
